Safety Tips

Keep all electrical products and cords away from water. Consider installing ground fault circuit interrupters on outlets near water. Never reach into water to get an appliance that has fallen in without first unplugging the appliance.

Put safety covers on all wall outlets. Keep electrical cords out of reach and sight of children or pets.

Avoid using several high-amperage appliances, such as microwaves, toasters, irons or other heat-producing appliances, on the same circuit.

Use power tools outdoors only in dry weather. Stand on dry surfaces and use only dry materials. Tools should be properly grounded wherever you use them.

Unplug appliances before a storm hits to avoid electric shock or damage to equipment.

Examine electrical cords to make sure they aren't frayed, damaged or placed under rugs or carpets.

Make sure that the proper wattage light bulbs are being used in light fixtures. Don't overload outlets and extension cords.

Don't climb any tree with power lines in it or near it.

Never touch a power line. Stay away from any vehicle if a power line is touching it.

Never remove the third prong from a three-prong plug.

Avoid damaging electrical cords; remove them from the outlet by pulling the plug, not the cord.

Don't fly model airplanes, kites or balloons near power lines. Don't try to remove anything (kite, balloon, pet or person) that becomes caught in a power line. Contact 911 or North West REC for assistance in determining how to handle the situation.
