Standby Generators
Standby Generators are a wonderful tool during an outage, but also extremely dangerous if used incorrectly.
Follow these tips from North West REC if you plan to operate a generator.
-
Know your generator!
-
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setting up and operating.
-
Isolate your generator - you may need a double-throw switch.
-
Call North West REC with any questions - we're here to help.

Read all information provided regarding installation, safety and maintenance. When a generator is not properly installed, it can 'back
feed' through the transformer and produce an output of 7,200 volts on the distribution line. As a result, a line crew working on the system would be put in danger. Â Â

If you connect it directly to your home's wiring, a double-throw switch is required to separate your generator from the North West REC system. Be sure to connect appliances or other devices directly to the generator with the appropriate-sized cords.Â

Take care when fueling your generator. Never try to refuel the unit while it is operating. Avoid spilling fuels on hot components.

Provide adequate ventilation for the generator to prevent overheating and the accumulation of toxic exhaust fumes. Do not install your generator in a basement, attached garage or any closed area. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide - an odorless, poisonous gas. Â
